Kris Dreemurr
(It's what they call "you.")
Narration upon inspecting the Dreemurr Residence's mirror, Chapter 2
Kris Dreemurr is a human Lightner and the main protagonist of Deltarune. They are the first hero as foretold in the Prophecy. Kris lives together with their adoptive mother, Toriel, at the Dreemurr Residence in northern Hometown.
In a Dark World, Kris functions as the party's leader. Kris excels at ACTing in battles, and their ACTs can have varying effects. While in a battle, Kris wields a sword, and can summon a shield when DEFENDing. In Chapter 4, during the cutscene where Kris parries the Sound of Justice's attack, it is revealed that the sword and shield can be wielded simultaneously.
For the majority of the game, Kris is controlled by the player. The few exceptions are brief cutscenes, or when they tear the SOUL out of their body.
Kris is a human teenager with amber-colored skin and shoulder-length brown hair, with a couple strands sticking out slightly at the back of their head. Kris's long bangs are somewhat messy and are mainly swept to the left, which also casts a shadow over their eyes. Kris's eyes are occasionally visibly red, and can glow red in the dark - one of their eyes is also briefly red when they descend into a Dark World. Kris wears a brown collared, long-sleeve lime shirt with a horizontal yellow stripe, and nondescript brown pants and shoes.
In a Dark World, Kris's skin becomes cyan-colored, and their hair changes to navy. Kris's clothes are also replaced with silver armor, which makes them resemble a knight. This includes a set of shoulder guards, a chestplate, gloves, and boots. Kris gains a navy blue bodysuit underneath the set, and a pink mantle[54] drapes across their right shoulder. The shading for their skin is also used for their mantle, which gives the illusion of blue stripes in a few of their sprites.
To the player, Kris consistently has a blank, neutral expression. They seemingly stand straight during the majority of non-scripted actions.[55] Kris's body language is markedly different when they are about to remove or have removed the SOUL.
During the events of Deltarune, Kris is mentioned to be introverted.[56] Both Susie and King refer to Kris as a "quiet person," and Noelle is astonished if they want to talk about "anything."[57] After Kris's brother, Asriel, left for college, they grew distant from their few friends. Kris's side of their shared bedroom is also strikingly bare. The shared game console is underneath Asriel's bed, their old children's books are in Toriel's classroom instead, and there is nothing on their shelves. Toriel also mentions that Kris is not normally energetic. They have a history of not waking up on time, and often sleep through the start of class.[58] Kris also prefers someone else getting them to and from school.[59][60] It is implied that Kris enjoys thinking back on their childhood, and that they are unsettled by the thought of growing up.[61]
Contrary to Kris's apparent detachment, they do have a variety of interests. Kris has always been mischievous, frequently pulling pranks on Noelle such as hiding under her bed to scare her.[62] Kris also attempted to flush a bath bomb down the toilet at their home at one point, and Toriel is weary that they will try it again.[63] When they were younger, Kris studied the occult with Catti.[64] They appear to still have an interest in the topic, as one of their search queries was "how to use magic." Kris likes video games, having frequently played games with Asriel in their childhood,[65] and being good enough that they can seemingly defeat Berdly in competitive games.[66] They have also searched for tutorials on how to play video game songs on the piano.[67]
Kris enjoys playing the piano. Prior to the game, they frequently played the hospital piano,[68] and the receptionist believes they can play "beautifully."[69] If the player makes the SOUL wait in the kitchen of the Holiday residence after Kris closes the vent, Kris can be heard playing piano renditions of the Deltarune soundtrack. Kris seems upset by the player's inability to play the piano, as they look angry when Susie laughs at their bad playing while under the player's control,[70] and actively try to prevent saying that they'll never play again.[71][72]
Kris's favorite food is Toriel's pie,[73] though they seem to like sweet and especially chocolatey foods in general. They always take a piece from the Box of Heart Candy,[74] like hot chocolate[75] and are implied to fancy Choco Diamonds, as this consumable heals them more than any other party member.[76]
Kris is shown to have a significant amount of agency outside of the player's choices. This is most clearly shown in scenes where Kris rips the SOUL out of their body, usually trapping it in a confined space to prevent being followed. They are also able to influence some dialogue choices, occasionally, the player may choose an option that other characters note sounds like Kris is straining to say or that Kris outright refuses to say out loud.[77] Kris is also shown performing actions independently of the player's control, including protecting Susie from King or drinking juice with her in church, showing their friendships exist outside of the player's influence. Additionally, there are instances where Kris stops inspecting something to prevent the player from learning more: when inspecting Asriel's room in Queen's Mansion, Kris closes their eyes before seeing anything; when inspecting an article about Asgore's removal from the police force, Kris intentionally stops reading before the reason is given; and when turning the doorknob in the church, they refuse to open the door. At the end of Chapter 1, Red Big Mouth and Toriel both comment on Kris's physical appearance. They claim that Kris seems "a little sick" and does not "look quite [themselves]" respectively. This implies that being under the SOUL's control slightly changes how healthy Kris looks, and is outright confirmed to change their voice and behavior.[78]
The separation between the player and Kris is most clearly shown in the Weird Route, where it is heavily implied Kris's actions are being done by the player against their will. Noelle describes the voice she heard giving her orders as terrifying, noting Kris has been acting very strange lately. When Kris reunites with the party after defeating Berdly, Susie and Ralsei immediately notice Kris appears distraught. In Chapter 4, Kris gives the player multiple choices to abort the route which are directed at them specifically[79] and punishes the SOUL in a violent outburst if the route is continued. Kris also tries to remedy the player's actions by comforting Noelle and bringing Berdly to the hospital between the events of Chapter 3 and Chapter 4
Kris is noticeably distraught after defeating Spamton NEO in the normal route, and Susie notices Kris appearing to be in shock. If the player responds to Susie questioning if they're okay by saying "Yes," Kris appears strained in their response, making Susie think that they're not okay; if the player responds by saying "No," Kris yells out the response, concerning Susie and Ralsei. This heavily implies that Spamton's dialogue about being a puppet and cutting his strings to be free, combined with Spamton's ultimate fate, deeply unsettled Kris.
Years prior to the events of Deltarune, Kris was adopted by the Dreemurrs and grew up in a loving family. However, as the only human child in Hometown, Kris often felt like an outsider. Kris once asked their adoptive parents when their "horns were going to grow in." In response, Toriel and Asgore bought a headband with red horns for Kris, who wore it for months.[80]
Growing up, Kris was very close with their older brother, Asriel. The two often spent time with their neighbors, December and Noelle, watching TV together and exploring the forests around town.[81] While the four were close friends, Kris and Noelle grew apart over the years. The cause for this is unknown. Kris had also wanted to befriend Bratty, as she was one of the "big kids." They willingly complied and retrieved food for her until she became sick.[82]
At some point, Toriel and Asgore divorced. While their family was broken, Kris and Asriel remained inseparable. On occasion, Asriel would buy Kris a hot chocolate at QC's Diner,[83] the place they used to frequent as a whole family.[84] One day, Asriel moved out to go to college, leaving Kris alone and without many friends, though they kept in contact before Hometown's internet outage.
Kris wakes up when Toriel shouts their name, and that they will be late for school. Kris gets out of bed, and can explore their house before leaving. Kris enters Toriel's van, and she drives them southeast. Outside of school, Toriel grabs Kris's hand and guides them inside, while Kris follows with their head tilted down. After Toriel's parting hug, Kris enters the left classroom.
Due to Kris's tardiness, Alphys tells them to pick a group partner from one of their classmates. Kris asks Noelle, who asks Alphys if Kris join her group with Berdly. Berdly protests, and during the commotion, Susie barges into the classroom. Instead, Alphys assigns Kris to be partnered with Susie. When Alphys realizes there is no chalk, she tasks Susie to get some from the supply closet. Alphys also asks Kris to go with her to ensure that Susie does not cause trouble, and is quickly dismissed.
Outside in the entrance hall, Kris sees Susie eating a piece of chalk. Susie realizes Kris saw her, and decides to intimidate them. In response, Kris steps away from her until their back is close to the lockers. Kris does not visually react when Susie slams them into the locker and threatens to eat their face. Despite Susie asking for Kris's opinion on them working entirely on the school project, she interrupts them, and states that their choices do not matter. Once Susie walks ahead, Kris can explore some of the hall, or can walk or try to outpace her.
Upon opening the supply closet, Kris and Susie are surprised to find it being inexplicably pitch-black. Despite Susie insisting that Kris should enter first, Kris steps away. When Susie reasons they should enter at the same time, Kris follows her into the closet. Inside, the two are unable to find the light switch, and they try to exit. The closet's door abruptly slams shut, and the papers fall. Both Kris and Susie back away from the falling paper before descending into the Closet Dark World.
Kris wakes up alone in ??????, with their appearance changed. The controls can be mashed to make Kris stand up sooner.[85] In an initial playthrough, if Kris interacts with any SAVE Points in the Dark World, their name, written as "Kris," is briefly visible on the SAVE before it is overwritten by the chosen "[NAME]" in the Introduction.
While Kris explores further east, and a silhouetted Lancer darts away. Kris slides down a path, and finds Susie hiding in a dust pile. Despite Susie asking Kris to lead, she impatiently leaves when Kris walks, runs, or goes the wrong way. Shortly after, Kris catches up with Susie, who notices the silhouetted Lancer atop a pillar. He attacks, and Susie warns Kris to run before fleeing. In the spade storm sequence, Kris is set to automatically run.[86] At the end, Susie directs Kris to follow down the cliff, and they comply.
Kris and Susie arrive at the empty Castle Town, and meet a cloaked Ralsei at the northern end. Ralsei wishes to inform of their prophetic destiny, and Kris can choose to listen to Ralsei's synopsis, or claim to already know it. This choice transfers via Chapter 1 Completion FILE.
Afterwards, Lancer interrupts Ralsei, who properly introduces himself and begins an encounter. Post battle, Lancer flees. Susie leaves on her own after Ralsei removes his cloak and reaffirms where they must go. Kris watches her depart before Ralsei suggests that they find Susie, and lets Kris lead. If Kris walks through the empty town, Ralsei reminds them that they can run.
In the training area, Ralsei offers to teach Kris about battling via the Dummy. Kris can choose to agree or not, though either choice causes Ralsei to give them the Manual. Near the open Great Door, Ralsei believes that Kris's choices are important, and suggests that they do not FIGHT. Kris can reassure that they can handle it, or be silent before entering Card Kingdom.
As they venture the Field, Kris and Ralsei come across Lancer multiple times, and as well as his troops. Along the way, they discover that Susie attacked Lancer, consumed a Broken Cake, and attacked some Jigsawrys. Further east, Kris is unable to solve the Second Clock Puzzle due to a missing party member. The two find Susie nearby, and Ralsei reasons with her, including emphasizing that only Kris can seal a Dark Fountain.[87] She reluctantly joins, and the puzzle is solved.
The party finds C. Round blocking the nearby path. Ralsei advises Kris to include Susie in an ACT. However, C. Round gets knocked away and flees in one turn. Nearby Seam's Shop, Ralsei tells Kris that Darkners may need to be Warned about Susie. They find Lancer again, and Kris watches Susie try to scare him. Past the Warp Door, Kris is tasked with solving the two-box puzzle. Once it is solved, the party enters the Great Board.
At the halfway point, Lancer showcases what he learned from Susie, and realizes the party does not have a proper name. Lancer lets Kris choose the team name from the three papers in the bucket, since he assumes they do not care.[88] This choice transfers.
Near Great Board's end, the party finds Lancer again, who fears C. Round. C. Round transforms into K. Round, and begins an encounter. Due to K. Round's healing, Kris is forced to ACT by bowing to make its crown fall off. Post battle, Lancer praises the three as heroes. However, Ralsei gently admonishes Susie, who then decides to join Lancer's team. Ralsei muses to Kris that he may have been harsh to her, and the two leave the area.
Throughout the Forest, Kris and Ralsei find Susie and Lancer, who proclaim themselves as a "DARK" version of the team name Kris chose. Kris watches Susie and Lancer's growing friendship and solves puzzles, including one in Clover's area. In the Bake Sale, Kris can also optionally purchase a Lancer Cookie from Susie and Lancer for 40 D$.
The two later find a disguised Lancer, who asks for help on creating a Thrash Machine to impress Susie. Kris and Ralsei comply, and the design choice transfers to Chapter 2. After navigating the Maze, Kris and Ralsei find an altered design that was created (or a replica of it), before Susie and Lancer begin an encounter. Upon winning, Susie once again rejoins the party, and Lancer tags along.
As the party's adventure goes on, Lancer grows uncomfortable with the situation and runs off towards Card Castle. Kris and the party attempt to follow him, but King's soldiers capture them.
Ralsei and Kris wake up in a prison cell together and quickly realize that Susie is being kept in an adjacent cell. Kris manages to guide Susie through a puzzle, unlocking her cell and allowing her to escape. After a confrontation with Lancer, Susie releases Kris and Ralsei from their cell.
After making their way up Card Castle, Kris and the party face off against King. After the fight, King deceives the party into believing he is willing to redeem himself, resulting in the party being cornered. Kris jumps in front of Susie to protect her, but is knocked back by another blow.
King approaches Kris and, after taunting them, lifts them into the air, ready to kill them. Regardless of how King was initially defeated, either Lancer and King's subjects rescue the party, or Susie distracts King long enough for Ralsei to cast Pacify on the King, putting him to sleep. Which outcome occurs is based on whether the party has harmed any of the denizens of the Dark World prior to facing King.
After saying goodbye to Ralsei, Kris seals the Eastern Fountain and returns home along with Susie. Kris can then explore Hometown and speak to the inhabitants. Once Kris returns home and goes to bed, the adventure is over.
At some point in the middle of the night, Kris tosses and turns in bed, only to suddenly leap from their covers and make their way into the center of their room. As they stand on the carpet, Kris slowly raises their arm before violently tearing out their SOUL from their body and forcefully tossing it into a cage in the corner of the room. The SOUL can be moved in the cage, indicating that the player controls the SOUL as opposed to Kris. Kris then brandishes a knife before turning their head and smiling menacingly, with their eye flashing red. The game then cuts to black.
At the beginning of the Chapter, Toriel rushes up to Kris's room, having noticed a knife in the pie. She believes that Kris had decided to sneakily eat it whole while she was asleep. She laughs it off, though, suggesting she should lock the oven in the future before they both set off to school once again.
Later, Kris goes to school and enters the Dark World again with Susie. They meet Ralsei and explore Castle Town. Eventually, Susie mentions they have homework to do, prompting Ralsei to banish them from the Dark World until their homework is done.
They go to the Library, only to find another Dark World awaiting them, and jump into it, this time with Noelle and Berdly taking part in the adventure as well. They soon encounter Queen, who acts as the Chapter's main antagonist. She captures Noelle, while Berdly switches to her side voluntarily. Eventually, Kris splits up with the other party members and rescues Noelle.
In Kris's company, Noelle begins learning to be less timid and fearful. Later, after the entire party gets imprisoned in Queen's Mansion, Berdly learns to be less arrogant. The final boss fight has both parties control their respective mechas and do battle in the style of Punch-Out!!, with Kris and their friends ultimately emerging victorious. Kris then seals the Library Fountain, and the Lightners all return to the Light World.
After exploring Hometown, Kris goes home and Toriel invites Susie to spend the night at the Dreemurr residence. She sends the pair to wash their hands. When Kris goes to the bathroom, they rip out their SOUL as soon as they turn the water on and escape through the window.
Following a chat between Toriel and Susie, Kris returns to the bathroom, washes their hands and re-inserts the SOUL. It is later revealed that the tires on Toriel's car have been slashed. When Susie and Toriel are both asleep, Kris opens a Dark Fountain.
The Chapter begins with Kris and Susie already in the dark world inside the TV. Kris and Susie quickly meet up with Ralsei, until they all unknowingly walk upon a stage, and are noticed by Tenna, who proclaims Kris and the others to be contestants for his television program. After Tenna's introduction, he properly sets up the game show, TV Time, for Kris, Susie, and Ralsei to play on live TV.
Upon starting TV Time, Kris is asked to input their name for their podium, which the player chooses. The first round of TV Time begins with the party playing Tenna's video game, The Legend of Tenna, and completing the game by obtaining at least three keys and the Mooncloud Stone. Further into the game, Kris encounters Lanino and Elnina, who insist on battling them, as they clogged or dried up the water of the oasis.
After collecting all three keys in the first stage, Kris with the party must complete a cooking minigame, where Kris is given the role of serving food by tossing plates at Shadowguys, and on occasion, Lanino and Elnina as they run by the cooking counter. Kris is able to jump to dodge fire and catch plates of food in mid-air, rewarding them extra POINTs.
After completing said minigame, Kris, Susie, and Ralsei are sent to the Green Room, where they can take a break before the next round of TV Time. If they have achieved S-rank or Z-rank, or choose to spend 1500 POINTs on a counterfeit S-rank pass, they can begin the Sword Route.
In the second minigame, which takes place on the Island Board, Kris and the party take three grand photos to unlock a magic raft to reach the Atlantis stadium. While searching for Grand Photos, Susie switches her controller with Kris's, and they play as HERO_AXE. Once reaching Atlantis stadium, before the Rock Video physical challenge, Kris has the option to strike a cool or glamorous pose before playing guitar to Raise Up Your Bat.
In Chapter 4, it is revealed that Kris visited Noelle off-screen and apologized for the events of the Weird Route, saying that it was just a prank. They also de-equipped the Thorn Ring from her, which is revealed to be a thorn in the Light World. Additionally, they retrieved Berdly from the computer lab and brought him to the hospital.
At the start of Chapter 4, Kris sleeps slouched and on their stomach on the living room's red chair, where they dream of being in front of the Dreemurr residence's Fountain with Susie. In the middle of Susie's speech, they wake up when Toriel calls to them for breakfast. Kris goes to sit at the table, where Toriel affectionately pinches Kris's cheek and comments on them "sleeping like a puppy." While Toriel and Susie converse, Kris does not consume the butterscotch pancakes. Everyone prepares for Church service by changing clothes, and Kris can leave or explore their house with Susie.
At Church, Kris can sleep, listen to the service, or check their pockets their fun. The latter varies depending via multiple Completion FILEs and Susie's mentioned items. If Dark Candy is in their inventory, they can choose to place stickers on themselves or Susie. Alternatively, Kris can obtain an Ancient Chocolate after Susie finds Asriel's letter. However, when Father Alvin begins reciting his father's sermon, Kris falls asleep.
Post service, Susie wakes them up for juice, and both of them pour a cup of juice into each other's mouths. At Susie's suggestion, Kris asks around the church hall for clues on the Shelter codes. This ends up Kris finding helpful information from Noelle and Alphys. For the latter, Kris makes a cup of Alphys's favored juice before inquiring, though they can either give it to her or drink it in front of her and toss the cup on the floor. Afterwards, Kris informs Susie, who makes a plan to ask Noelle if they can work on their school project at her house. When Noelle agrees, Susie and Kris high-five each other, and Susie later pushes them out of the Church.
Outside, Kris watches Asgore try and make up with Toriel, and receives flowers from him. Kris and Susie shed their church clothes, and can explore Hometown before visiting Noelle's House. This includes visiting Ralsei's Castle, having a tea party, and discovering Ralsei's room, and/or spending time with Susie at QC's Diner.
At the Locked Gate, Kris offers Susie the flowers to keep her preoccupied until Noelle opens the gate. At the front yard, Noelle joins the study party, and Kris and Susie can investigate Noelle's house before settling at her living room. After Susie tosses Noelle's phone, she tasks Kris to search for clues. When Kris enters Dess's room, they notice Dess's guitar. Inspecting it causes Kris to fall on their knees and tear the SOUL out. Kris goes downstairs to toss the SOUL into a gift box in the gift room, and slams the door.
Kris can later be found at the kitchen, where they drink chocolate milk as they listen to the caller. Once the caller's dialogue ends, Kris lets their head fall on the counter. If the SOUL approaches, makes noise, or is in Kris's line of sight, Kris captures or stuns it. Kris gets hit by the auto treat catcher as they return to the gift room, and closes the vent grate before tossing the SOUL into the empty gift box. As they leave, they turn back to stare at it before slamming the door. If the SOUL returns to the kitchen and idles, Kris eventually slowly walks up to the piano and plays piano renditions of several songs from Deltarune's soundtrack.
Once Noelle and Susie leave the SOUL on its own, it can slide off the table and make its way to Dess's room, where Kris throws a hockey puck at the SOUL from underneath Dess's bed. Kris then lunges at the SOUL while grabbing the guitar before hearing Susie and Noelle questioning the loud noise coming from Dess's room and hiding in the closet.
After Susie and Noelle enter the room and sit by Dess's bed, Kris begins swatting at the SOUL with a hockey stick while Susie and Noelle begin discussing Noelle's "dream" and the SOUL eventually strums Dess's guitar, prompting Kris to hit it multiple times, inadvertently scaring Susie and Noelle with all the noise. Susie then opens the closet door, revealing Kris laying on their back while holding Dess's guitar. Susie then tells Kris to stop making so much noise and takes the guitar out of Kris's hands before closing the closet door again. Once Susie and Noelle leave the room, Kris slightly opens the closet door and dials the caller's number. They question the fact that Susie has acquired the guitar and state that they will be right there. Kris then puts the SOUL back in their chest before tripping on the hockey puck on the ground and walking out of the room where they see Susie playing guitar to Noelle on the couch.
Asriel has been consistently kind to his younger sibling. He has used the knockoff controller to play video games,[89] begged for forgiveness for Kris's "sins,"[90] and had carried Kris to school. The duo are very close since childhood, and various Hometown residents acknowledge this.[83] After Asriel left for college, Kris often stayed up late conversing with him online, until the internet went out.[91] Despite this, Kris deeply misses Asriel.[92]
In Chapter 3, when the player implies they have seen Ralsei's face before, Kris will break into laughter while also assuring them that Ralsei and Asriel are different.[93] In Chapter 4, when Susie mistakes Asriel for Ralsei, Kris adamantly points out every difference between them.[94]
Years prior to the events of Deltarune, it is implied Toriel had difficulties raising Kris, as she had frequently borrowed How To Care For A Human from the Library.[95] Despite this, Toriel is patient and motherly, and finds most of Kris's antics endearing. She still holds Kris's hand when taking them to school, and keeps their childhood drawing in her classroom. Although she loves both Kris and Asriel equally, she tries to limit Kris's impulsiveness, such as locking the chocolate kisses in her room.[96]
In Chapter 1, Kris is initially intimidated by Susie's rough demeanor. After Susie warns Kris and they escape the spade storm together, Kris is no longer terrified of her.[97] They observe Susie's friendliness towards Lancer, and she tries to recruit Kris for their "DARK" team.[98] However, after Susie promises not to hurt Lancer's father, she decides to listen to Kris's commands.[99] After the battle against King, Kris shields her from a spade attack, only to get knocked down by the King. Now seeing Kris as her friend, Susie stops King from killing them. Upon returning to school, she asks Kris if they can return to the Dark World with a friendly smile. When Toriel calls Kris afterwards, Kris tells her that they were hanging out with a friend, indicating that Kris had a good time with Susie, and Monster Kid's ridicule of Susie offends Kris after their adventure.[100]
During Chapter 2, more evidence of their friendship is shown through Kris's actions. They focus on Susie when they drink her Tea, and is distinctly compliant to Susie. If Kris inspects the "Susie-like statue" and "ICE-E statue," Susie wants the former, and insists Kris gets the latter for their room. Kris steals either or both without a prompt, even if the latter statue discomforts them.[101]
Throughout Chapters 3 and 4, Kris and Susie grow even closer. Kris is reassured by Susie's presence[102] and most moments during the Chapters when Kris's personality is shown are through their interactions with Susie, such as when Kris and Susie pour drinks into each other's mouths or when Kris lifts Susie without a prompt while she eats the snack tray outside Noelle's house. Kris is also shown to care a lot for Susie through the Sword Route, as Kris flinches away from the screen when the player directs them to kill HERO_AXE and, if the player attempts to use HERO_SWORD to attack Susie when she enters the room, Kris will pull her away. Kris is also shown on multiple occasions to enjoy staring at Susie.[103]
Kris and Ralsei work together throughout Deltarune, including several times the two are separated from the rest of the party. Ralsei appears to be aware of the SOUL's influence on Kris and encourages them to close their eyes and think of something else, in order to be able to speak to them freely without the player listening in. Ralsei generally likes Kris very much and sees them as a friend, offering to help them with puzzles and complimenting them.
Kris appears to be indifferent to Ralsei at first. However, they show support for him in later Chapters, even without the player's input. It is implied that Kris likes Ralsei less than Susie in Chapter 2, as the Ralsei Tea restores less HP for them than the Susie Tea. However, as the story progresses, Kris occasionally shows some kindness towards Ralsei, such as laying flat on the ground next to him when prompted by the player to "show him compassion" after he is stepped on by Susie during a scene in Chapter 4. Additionally, in the opposite situation, Kris will occasionally cover their mouth or cough mid-sentence when the player picks a dialogue option that would upset Ralsei.[104] As with Susie, Kris looks away from the screen when prompted to kill HERO_SCARF in the Original Game.
It is unclear what exactly Kris's feelings are towards Ralsei, as most of their interactions take place with the player controlling Kris, and it is never revealed what the two do during moments when the player does not see them.
Kris and Noelle are neighbors and childhood friends. Years prior to the events of Deltarune, Noelle and Kris used to be close and spent a lot of time together, sometimes as a group with their older siblings. Kris had a reputation for pulling pranks on Noelle, but was often swiftly reprimanded by Dess for it. However, the two began to grow apart over time and Kris became somewhat of a loner without her.
In Chapter 1, Noelle offers to let Kris join her group for the project and later asks if they need help with homework, showing that she has remained helpful to them even after they grew apart.
In Chapter 2, Kris and Noelle end up forming a truce and traversing Cyber City together. There, Noelle reminisces about their childhood and opens up to Kris, slowly rekindling their friendship. One of the Addisons asks if the two of them are friends or something else, and Noelle is happy when "We're friends" is chosen.[105] Noelle also mentions that Kris is the only person who knows how weird she is,[106] and that Kris and she know each other better than anyone,[107] indicating a deep familiarity between the two of them.
In Chapter 4, Noelle is surprised when Kris compliments her singing and mentions that she misses hearing them play the piano.[108] While at her house, Kris automatically steals one of Noelle's pencils out of habit, which she doesn't react to, presumably being used to it. When eavesdropping on her and Susie in Dess's room, Noelle mentions Kris's odd behavior[109] and voice in the last few days, making her one of the only people who noticed a change in Kris since the player took control.
Following the Weird Route puts a considerable strain on Noelle's and Kris's relationship, as she perceives the player's choices to be made by Kris.
In Chapter 2's Weird Route, Noelle gradually becomes more scared of Kris because of the violent orders given to her, and even considers harming them at one point,[110] before seemingly falling into a trance-like state where she actively wants to become stronger with Kris's help. After waking up in the Light World, Noelle initially thinks what happened in the Cyber World was just a dream, but becomes genuinely terrified when Kris is made to corner her at the hospital while wearing her wristwatch.
In Chapter 4's Weird Route, Noelle is focused on Kris rather than Susie when she invites them to her house, and asks Kris to speak with her in private once there. She reveals that Kris visited her, comforted her and apologized, before removing a thorn from her finger. Like in the normal route, she is able to differentiate the player's voice from Kris's, as Noelle mentions feeling relieved when she heard Kris's regular voice. She is shocked and becomes terrified of Kris again when the player reads her thoughts and re-equips the Thorn Ring to her. Kris gives the player multiple options to abort the route, flees the room with Noelle if they spot the SOUL early, and reacts violently towards the SOUL if the route is continued, showing they are very protective of Noelle. Despite everything, Noelle seems excited to see Kris at the festival by the end of the day.[111]
Kris and Berdly have a rivalry with each other, but are implied to have played video games together in the past (especially fighting games, by Berdly's mentions of wavedashing).[66] When selecting who they would like to go to the festival with, if Berdly is selected, then Kris repeats his name loudly.[112] They become allies throughout the later parts of Chapter 2 and work together to defeat Queen, with Berdly saving Kris, Susie, and Ralsei before their fight with GIGA Queen. Although Berdly believes the events in the Cyber World to be a dream after waking up, his opinions of Kris and Susie slightly soften, giving studying with them a chance and even nicely wishing them both a good day before leaving the Library.
As children, Kris and Asriel used to spend time with Noelle and Dess. It is implied that they were friends, although Dess may have been much closer to Asriel than she was to Kris. It seems Dess did not tolerate Kris's tormenting of Noelle, as she on at least one occasion smacked Kris with a wiffle bat when they were lying to Noelle.[113] It appears that Dess used to discipline Kris in this way often, as hinted at by Noelle's dialogue,[114] as well as Kris's reaction to some of the things in Dess's room.[115]
Rudy is a friend of Kris's father, Asgore. He affectionately sees Kris as "the creepy kid next door" he once yelled at for getting tangled in the Holidays' light display.[116] Rudy treats Kris kindly regardless, and jests if they inspect other objects in the room.[117] In Chapter 1, Rudy is surprised to see Kris visit him, and assumes Toriel urged them.
On a normal route in Chapter 2, Kris first encounters Spamton in a Cyber City alleyway, making a deal to help him build his battle body by opening the basement in Queen's Mansion using KeyGen and carrying the disk. Kris seems scared of him, as they stagger backwards in each encounter, yet until the Spamton NEO battle on a normal route, Kris chooses to interact with him alone and vice-versa. It is in the Spamton NEO battle that the SOUL turns yellow. If his strings are cut in battle, his faith in the heroes increases as he turns into the Dealmaker, as well as giving Kris a Shadow Crystal. When Susie asks if Kris is okay after the battle, if the player selects "No," Kris turns away and yells. Otherwise, they are left with goosebumps, a grumbling stomach, and are strained to say anything, implying Spamton's words about being a puppet, combined with his ultimate fate, deeply unsettled Kris.
On the Weird Route, he makes his initial deal with Noelle and Kris to sell them the Thorn Ring. During his battle, he expresses disappointment in Kris for using violence on him and feels betrayed.
Spamton also seems aware of Kris's strained relationship to their SOUL, saying they are "the same," referring to the strings that control him.
Kris was one of Tenna's most frequent users, watching him with their family and the Holidays and playing games with Asriel and Noelle. They, with Susie and Ralsei, become his contestants on TV Time during Chapter 3. As with the rest of the party, Tenna attempts to appeal to Kris's nostalgia to keep himself plugged in. Without completing the Sword Route, Kris deals less damage to Tenna during their battle.
During the Sword Route, Tenna is the final character they must kill to reach LV MAX. Before dying, he nervously states that he had followed his side of their deal and asks whether they will turn him off again.[118]
Kris's relationship with the Knight is unclear. During the party's battle with the Knight in Chapter 3, Kris deals less damage than any other party member unless Ralsei and Susie are DOWNed, in which case their damage output increases. This implies that while Kris is holding back against the Knight, they do not tolerate it harming their friends.
In Chapter 4, if Kris is able to reach the Knight in the Dark Sanctuary, they do not attack it despite Susie's insistence. When Ralsei asks Kris to close their eyes, if they do not choose to picture Susie, they are given the choice to think of the Knight. When Kris imagines it removing its helmet, they vividly imagine Jockington and Temmie instead to avoid thinking of the Knight's identity.[119]
One of earliest concepts art of Kris is from 2014 or 2015, as which was shared by Toby Fox on his official Twitter on 2018.[120]
Gigi helped with Kris's character design, and has also created the various alternate costumes for Kris.[121] Chess worked on the Dark World color palette[54] and had created some base sprites and animations for Temmie Chang to work on.[122] One of the animations Chess has created includes Kris's idle animation during encounters.
During the UNDERTALE 6th Anniversary stream, Toby Fox has some comments during the modified Chapter 1. Further in the stream, Toby states Kris's pronouns.[52]
At the start of the game, Toby states that the scene of Susie menacing Kris is inspired by a real bully in his life, who was familiar with his mother.[123]
During the start of ??????, Toby confirms that buttons can be mashed to make Kris stand up sooner. He describes it as a "pointless detail."[85] During the spade storm sequence, Kris is set to automatically run, as Toby was unsure if it was possible to finish the sequence by walking through it, and if players would be aware of the running feature due to it not being present in Undertale.[86]
Kris appears a few times in the DELTARUNE Chapter 1 Spoiler-Free Trailer. However, their face is censored by an Annoying Dog. Versus Rudinn, their name is written as "Dogs" in the encounter. In Castle Town, Kris pets an extra Annoying Dog while their face is still censored.
During the Spamton Sweepstakes 2022 event, pages were added to the official Deltarune website. The following anecdotes feature or mention Kris.
The Rotating Banner, deltarune.com/icee/, is an ICE-E sightings report from a young Noelle, who screamed when she thought she saw the ICE-E on a pizza box wink at her. Dess burned out the eyes on the box, and Asriel suggested they bury the box. As Kris was about to bury it in the graveyard, Noelle fussed over potential zombies. They wore the box over their head and scared Noelle, and Dess hit Kris before throwing out the box instead in response.
Two of the links are private posts from Noelle's blog.
In deltarune.com/kris_dreemurr_kris/, Noelle reminisces about how Kris used to visit and play with her nearly every day. Sometimes, Kris abruptly stopped to ""get a snack," from the dining room, where they played the piano instead. If she watched, Kris would stop playing. Kris instead continued to play when Noelle stopped watching.
The URL for this post seems to imply that Kris inherited the Dreemurrs' last name, making their full name Kris Dreemurr; which was later confirmed in Chapter 3 via a quiz.
In deltarune.com/the_n3w3st_g1rl_g1rl/, Noelle mentions how Susie had been actively bullying Kris, though she notes that Kris seems "oblivious" to this and that they do not inform Toriel. It describes an incident after school where Kris was asleep at their desk, and Susie started to bully them for using apple-scented shampoo.
When Susie threatened them as she bit an apple, Kris suppressed a laugh. With their "gamer reaction speed" they deflected, caught, and bit into the apple she threw. Susie immediately grabbed them by the hair and claimed Toriel would soon be tired of them, and be happier if they were to disappear. Noelle notes that Kris had quietly responded back, which caused Susie to leave. Afterwards, Kris hears Noelle and finds her in the locker, and only to slowly close it and leave.
In deltarune.com/rain/, Noelle assumes that Kris has seen the rare cat that lowered points, though she assumes Kris would not give a straight answer if she asked. It is a Silence Link added on May 9, 2025.

Kris has several different titles.
- At the start of Chapter 1, Kris is a Human. "Body contains a human SOUL."
- After meeting Ralsei, they become a Leader. "Commands the party with various ACTs."
- If Kris inspects every bed in Card Castle, they become a Bed Inspector. "Inspects all beds inexplicably."
- After fighting Sweet Cap'n Cakes in Chapter 2, they become a Tactician. "Commands the party by ACTs. Sometimes."
- When inspecting the moss in Chapter 2, they become a Moss Finder. "Basic moss-finding abilities."
- If on the Weird Route in Chapter 2, they become a Leader. "Commands."
- At the beginning of Chapter 3, they become a Tactician again. "Commands the party by ACTs."
- After escaping Tenna in the third round of TV Time, they become a Director. "Moves the actors around."
- If they find the moss in the second round of TV Time, they instead become a Moss Mystery. "Intermediate moss skills."
- If the Egg is found, their title states that they are "Enjoying the youthful days."
- After completing the first section of the Sword Route, they become a Blazer. "Specializes in sword attacks."
- After completing the second section of the Sword Route, they become an Ice Blazer. "Specializes in sword attacks."
- After defeating the Shadow Mantle Holder and obtaining the Shadow Mantle, they become a Sheath. "Breath quickens around swords."
- At the beginning of Chapter 4, they become a Dark Hero. "Carries out fate with the blade."
- If they find Chapter 4's moss, they become a Moss Most. "Munched the most moist mosses."
- If the Weird Route is continued in Chapter 4, they become a Dark Bead. "Broken off, but still locked."
You can do many things. Don't confuse it with magic.
Chapter 2
As a human, Kris cannot cast spells. Instead, Kris uses the ACT command, which allows them to perform actions that satisfy the enemy and make them possible to spare. These actions are different for each enemy.
Most ACTs do not require TP to perform, although there are some ACTs that do cost TP. Certain ACTs are exclusive to Kris and cost TP, making them similar to spells, although these are still implied not to be magic. These include:
- Courage versus King,
- Pirouette versus Jevil,
- HealDeal versus Spamton.
- X-Slash and FriedPipis versus Spamton NEO on the Weird Route.
- Banish versus Titan Spawn.
- Unleash versus Jackenstein and the Titan.
In the fights with King and Queen in Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, as well as in the battle against the Titan in Chapter 4, Kris can ACT with Susie, Ralsei, and the old man to conjure improved versions of their spells, such as Dual Heal and Red Buster. These spells are stated in-game to be enhanced by the SOUL "shining its power" upon the other party members.
In Chapter 2, Ralsei states that ACTing is Kris's "unique talent" as opposed to casting spells.[124] However, shortly after, Susie, Ralsei and Noelle gain the ability to ACT during their own turns via S-Action, R-Action or N-Action. Kris's ability to ACT still retains some advantages over them, though, as they have access to multiple ACTs per enemy (as opposed to one) and they can ACT together with other party members to achieve more powerful effects.
Costs 25% TP. Only usable against Spamton NEO during the Weird Route. An attack that
hits the enemy twice with delayed strikes in a single turn, doing moderately more
damage than the standard Fight action. Deals damage based on Kris's Attack, rounded

Kris LINE sticker.
- Kris is exclusively referred to using singular "they/them" pronouns. This
suggests that Kris is non-binary.
- Kris is also a gender-neutral name, applicable to anyone regardless of gender.
- When using the "TakeCare" or "TakeCareX" ACT against Virovirokun, Kris can appear with either a doctor's headband, a nurse's cap, or neither. This is unique to them, as all other characters only have one possible outfit.
- Kris bears a resemblance to an unused human sprite from Undertale. Albeit, this is primarily due to the shadowed face, the identical hair color, and the similar shirt coloring.
- Kris's Dark World appearance resembles Varik from the Brandish series, whom Toby Fox used as the protagonist for the EarthBound Halloween Hack. The Brandish series itself has also been used as an inspiration for Deltarune and other projects by Toby Fox.
- Kris shares several characteristics with Frisk and Chara
from Undertale:
- Similarly to Frisk, both use singular "they" as a personal pronoun, albeit Chara distinctly goes by "it" when reflecting in third person.
- Kris has a similar name to Frisk, and has the exact skin and hair
colors. Their Dark World mantle's palette is also reminiscent of Frisk's
shirt.[126] Both also exclusively
go by singular "they" pronouns.
- Clam Girl discusses "Suzy", her neighbor's daughter who appears to be Frisk's age, and suggests that Suzy should be Frisk's friend. This may be a parallel to Kris and Susie's friendship in Deltarune.
- Like Chara, Kris enjoys chocolates, appears to have some interest in knives, is adopted by the Dreemurr family, is good friends with their brother Asriel, and wears a green-yellow striped shirt.
- Pressing the cancel key when Kris gets out of bed at the beginning of a Chapter causes them to leave their bed faster.
- Kris is the only party member to not have a unique hurt sprite when they receive damage in battle.
- Kris starts out with a max HP of 90 when first entering the Dark World, and their max HP increases as each Fountain is sealed. However, their maximum amount of HP in the Light World is always 20 - the same amount as Frisk at LV 1.
- Kris's red eye flash in the ending of Chapter 1 is reused from Undertale,
as its sprite names (
spr_asgore_eyeflash_serious) confirm that it is the same as Asgore's in his boss fight. - Kris's dance during Chapter 2's Sweet Cap'n Cakes fight and Chapter 3's Rouxls Kaard fight takes inspiration from the Slavic dance "Kozachok," more commonly known as the "Squat Dance" or "Kazotsky Kick" outside of Slavic communities.
- When Susie thinks about what Kris would do during the Ferris wheel scene in Chapter 2, one of the options is "Point and hearts come out," referring to her and Kris's ACT animation. As of Chapter 3, this now also can refer to how, in the Wild West Minigame and the Tenna boss fight, when Kris wants to shoot something, they point with a finger gun and heart-shaped bullets are fired.

- ↑ It's
funny... there was a time when they were coming over almost every
day.
We'd play, and we'd play... then after a while, they would suddenly get very still, like they were remembering something.
They'd go into the dining room to "get a snack," then after a few moments, I'd hear the piano.
The first few times, I went into watch them play, but when they realized I was looking, they'd always shut the piano and come back.
So over time, I just started staying on the couch in the living room. I'd lie there, listening to them play, sometimes for hours, sometimes even until I fell asleep.
Even then, what were they thinking about me?
Maybe they weren't thinking about me at all.
They didn't have a piano at their house, so they probably just came over to use mine.
Even then, with my eyes open, there were times when I wasn't even sure if we were friends.
But when I closed my eyes,
it felt like a concert just for me. - Noelle, https://deltarune.com/kris_dreemurr_kris/ - ↑ Jump up to: 52.0 52.1 UNDERTALE 6th Anniversary So We Play DELTARUNE Chapter 1 For Some Reason - LIVE! - YouTube (Archived)

And a little pinch of cinnamon spice. - Asgore, Weird Route, Chapter 4 - ↑ It's quite small, but some people REALLY like it. - Choco Diamond's description
- ↑ ... huh?
... Why are you talking... with your mouth closed? - Susie, responding to "Say what's on your mind," Chapter 4 - ↑ Everything that came out of their mouth,
sounded... odd.

Oh, you wore it for months! Whatever happened to it? - Toriel, Chapter 2 - ↑ ...don't you miss exploring, Kris?
Back when the four of us were kids?
Gosh, remember that night we explored the forest behind the graveyard? - Noelle, Chapter 2 - ↑ Remember that time you wanted to hang out with
us big kids?
I was like, "yeah, of course! Just get us some burgers!"
Then, like, amazingly...
You ACTUALLY got them...
So I told you to go back and get some french fries, too...
... then a dozen miniature cakes...
They were SO good, I ate like six!
Then I like...
Suddenly got so sick I had to go home. - Bratty, Chapter 1 - ↑ Jump up to:

a "videos game."
He also confessed to various "sins" on your behalf,
Begging for your forgiveness for "dropping the lizard on purpose." - Father Alvin, Chapter 2 - ↑ So maybe you were just...
Staying up late talking to Asriel online again? - Alphys, Chapter 2 - ↑ (It's a calendar with college vacation

W-well, I...
Kris, I'm sorry, but...
This is... my face.
And if there's one thing I like about myself, it's this...
So, even if you think it's boring, or too similar to...
D-don't laugh, Kris. If you think it's the same as...
OK, I get it! You don't think it's too similar! But...
Kris! - Ralsei, responding to "Seen it before" while talking about his face, Chapter 3 - ↑ HAHAHA! Why did you photoshop Ralsei to
be...
... What? That's your brother?
... Yeah, now that I look at it, he looks, uh, different.
I SAID I get it! You can stop pointing out the differences! - Susie, "Asriel photo," Chapter 4 - ↑ (It's a book for monsters on how to care for

Ah, you're nodding! That means, um, yes, doesn't it? - Ralsei, "Of course not", Chapter 4 - ↑ Yep! That's right! We're friends!
(It's... surprisingly nice just hearing Kris say that...) - Noelle, "We're friends," Chapter 2 - ↑ (Sigh...)
(Kris is the only one who knows how weird I am.)
(It's not fair, y'know!?)
(Everyone knows how weird YOU are. Fahahaha.) - Noelle, Chapter 2 - ↑ (Kris's been my neighbor forever...)
(We've been through so much, sometimes it feels like...)
(We know each other better than anyone.)
(... yet, somehow, it's hard to say we're exactly friends...?) - Noelle, Chapter 2 - ↑ I don't think you've ever... complimented me,
before. Fahaha.
You know, if you wanted to join the choir, you could...
I always missed, um... liked hearing you play the piano. - Noelle, "Nice singing," Chapter 4 - ↑ What was interesting is that... Kris

They acted... Just like they do recently, I guess. - Noelle, Chapter 4 - ↑ (... See, Noelle? Nothing bad is going to
happen.)
(Getting that ring... was good, wasn't it?)

Noelle said...
She's really looking forward to seeing you. - Carol Holiday, Chapter 4 - ↑ Berdly?
...
Umm, you don't have to repeat yourself so loudly, Kris. - Ralsei, if "Berdly" is selected as Kris's companion to the festival, Chapter 3 - ↑ Wait! You're teasing me, aren't you,
Kris?
L-like when you told me ICE-E was real and eats kids...
